Shattering Self- Sabotage

Self Sabotage is a bitch. We would never put up with someone else knocking us down right before we crossed a finish line, yet we do it to ourselves all the time. We get so close to a goal we can taste it and then we launch into destructive behavior that enables us to remain in our "safe, comfortable world" that we have been living just fine in. We're not necessarily super happy or thrilled with the safe, comfy place, but we're okay, we're fine, we doing alright.

Let's look at a journey I'm on right now. About 5 weeks ago I launched a HUGE goal for myself. My acting coach, Michael McCarthy, helped me to understand what a LEVERAGE goal is and its forever changed how I will look at goals. A LEVERAGE goal is one that if you succeed at accomplishing it, you will also knock down other existing goals you have. For instance, if I get down to the size 6 that I have always wanted to be, I will feel great, but I will also be in a clear category as an actress. I have always felt that I confuse casting directors, producers, directors, the people who give me the jobs, because I am too pretty to be the quirky best friend and too big to be the leading lady. I don't think this has to be the truth of me, but it sure seems to be, and I'm at this point in my life where I am READY to book commercials, acting gigs on TV and great roles in incredible little indie films, so why not do everything in MY power to make it easier? Plus, I obviously believe this as a truth, and as someone who creates her own world with her thoughts, it surely has manifested in my life. Achieving my health and fitness goal will then help me achieve career goals, financial goal and fun, travel goals, therefore making it a LEVERAGE goal.

Being able to see this goal as a LEVERAGE goal has helped me stick to the regime I set up for myself. My goal is to lose 40 lbs in 4 months. This is a completely attainable goal as I only have to lose 2.5 lbs per week. I've been making a menu every week, shopping with a grocery list, and working out 4-5 times a week. The first week I lost 5 lbs. The second week I lost 5 lbs. The 3rd week I lost 2 and the 4th week I lost 1 lb. I lost 13 lbs in ONE MONTH. I'm ahead of the game.

Week 5 I got a little fatigued from making the menus, the shopping lists, etc (which help in a HUGE way) and I had a lot of leftover food in my fridge, residual behavior from when I used to do monthly shopping for our family of 6 with my Mom, I always buy too much for 1 person. I took a break, I stuck to the diet, but I didn't have a menu or a shopping list, just ate what I had left and didn't worry about it. Then I went out with some friends and had some drinks, some great food and some wine. Too much. BUT we had a lot of fun and I realize that if I'm successful at life I'm going to have to be able to be a human and go out, treat myself and get right back on plan.

I'm starting to suspect that Self Sabotage is at play here. We're in Week 6 and yesterday I stuck to my plan until I had a little cheese at lunch and then some potatoes at dinner and THEN ice cream. NONE of those things are on the plan.

Googling Self Sabotage I found this definition:
"Behavior is said to be self-sabotaging when it creates problems and interferes with long-standing goals. The most common selsabotaging behaviors are procrasination, self medication with drugs or alcohol, comfort eating in the face of weight concerns, and self injury such as cutting. These acts may seem helpful in the moment, but ultimately undermine us, especially when we engage in them repeatedly." --- Psychologytoday.com

Behavior that cuts us off at the knees and stops us from completing our goals. There is also a scientific reason that we self sabotage. our bodies do it for us as an act of protection from the fear of the unknown that we are facing. In the 60's Dr. Maxwell Maltz wrote a book called Psycho Cybernetics exploring why his plastic surgery patients who he had repaired cleft palates or deformities had such extreme reactions to the after result. There were some patients who after he fixed them saw only the ugly deformity that had been there before, while another would have the complete opposite reaction and be thrilled. He quickly discovered that the patients were reacting to their "labels" and the "identities" that they knew of themselves. Your nervous system behaves according to your labels and sets your internal thermostat expecting them to stay at the same level. When we set goals, and begin to push ourselves outside of the comfort zone, your nervous system will activate in order to keep you in the safe and comfortable zone.  This explains why when you begin pursuing a goal, seemingly external and internal forces will align to distract you from accomplishing your goal, keeping you right in that safe, cozy, comfortable place you’ve come to know and love.

I see this type of behavior in my actor friends all of the time. One of them recently went to SXSW film festival because he was the lead in a movie that premiered there. I asked him about his experience and he said that it was overwhelming and exciting and he had very little time to do anything but be interviewed and talk about the movie. He was treated like a true movie star who is the lead in a movie, something he has wanted for a long time. He told me he was relieved to be back at his job, waiting tables, that he was happy there and it felt nice to be back. Luckily, he knew he was in the process of Self Sabotaging himself and recognized that though he was comfortable waiting tables that he wouldn't allow himself to push away all the success from this movie!

Fear can make us freeze, fear can cause us to play it safe, fear is a bitch, therefore it must be part of self sabotage.

I do not want to be a waitress forever, I'm tired of having to live paycheck to paycheck and I am SO over getting THIS close to booking a job and having them give it to the other girl. Enough universe, its time to allow me success, abundance, freedom, bliss, humor, love, money and everything this little size 6 heart desires. I will be comfortable being the pretty girl, I will be okay with turning heads and attention that I am not used to.

The number one thing I've learned to love on this journey already is exercise. I've done made myself addicted to exercising. When I don't go workout for a few days in a row now I feel antsy and bad. I have been active for a lot of my life, but I don't think I ever expected to be addicted to exercising. Its now not something I have to decide if I want to do it or not, its not a choice, its just something that I do as a part of my regular day.

I'm recommitting to my goal. 40 lbs in 4 months. I know I can do this. I will succeed at it and my cybernetic system can relax, because its gonna go through a change as well!

21 Day Challenge Check in

I started a challenge with myself a few weeks ago that I would do certain things everyday. As I've progressed on this journey I have struggled to simply observe what's been happening or not happening, and to learn from the process as opposed to beating myself up over not completing everything on my check list everyday.

I'm actually quite surprised by what's been slipping through the cracks and NOT getting checked off my list! The one thing that I started this project for, to write everyday, my own stuff, has not gotten done ONCE. Which forces me to ask, is this something that I really want to do? Is it that 2 hours seems so overwhelming? Would 1 hour be more achievable?

I don't know that I have any answers yet, but will continue with the challenge to see how it plays out. Truthfully, a LOT of the time, I'm simply running out of hours in my day. So, its most likely going to have to be a shifting of my priorities, a change in my schedule to make room for something that is important to me. Because in reality, writing is important to me and something that I want to make room for in my life.

There was even one day when only the affirmations got done because I was hungover from the night before. Normally when I drink too much and am hung over the next day I beat myself up in An incredible way. . . not sure where this comes from . . . but this time was so different. I had such a delightful evening that night at my favorite place, Covell, with two of my favorite people, Mapuana and Erin and all of my favorite people working that night, Eduardo, Doug, Matt and Dustin, that it was simply impossible to beat myself up for having such a good time. Of course I could choose in the future to have a delightful evening of the like kind without having to be so hungover. This day I choose to accept that sometimes, I am authentically a person who likes to drink a little too much. I would re-live that night over and over again. The crazy thing is all we did was sit at the bar, enjoy some AMAZING wine, AMAZING company and laugh and giggle our way through the night! No shenanigans, just pure, honest, open, connection with some pretty amazing people!

On a positive note, most everyday I have been Free Writing, meditating and reciting the 5 affirmations in the mirror 21 times. More often than not I work out 45-60 minutes a day, which has been GREATLY helped by the fact that I rescued a puppy and in order to wear her out I HAVE to take her on long walks everyday. I think this could be a GREAT new diet fad and reality show! Give over-weight people a hyper active dog that HAS to be exercised and watch how quickly they lose the weight! Actually, the more I think about it, we could be killing two birds with one stone, helping people lose weight AND rescuing animals that need homes. . .hmmm . . . Someone write that down!

Ohhh, I just did! ; )

The Puppy!                                            Miss Audrey Go-Lightly

Eating Healthy is another thing one my check list. I am happy to report that this has also been achieved most everyday! There are some days when I've found myself stress eating at midnight after a long day of work, but its okay, because I'm learning that sometimes I'm a stress eater. I still haven't fully launched the "Fat Flush" that I wanted to, but this begs the question, is this something that I really want to do. Do I really want to be a size 6? or Do I want to love and accept my body as it is and rock the size 10 that I am? This was asked of me yesterday and to be honest with you and with myself, I still don't know the answer to my question.

I have wanted to achieve my goal of being a size 6 for about 5 years now. . . but if I really wanted to do it, why haven't I yet? Is it the number that's off putting? I know that I REALLY REALLY want to rock a white bikini someday (I don't know why WHITE, with my skin tone its probably not the best choice, but I REALLY want one) and I really want to have long, lean dancer type muscles that I get when I consistently do Cardio Barre or Tracy Effinger's Squeeze workout.

What I REALLY want more than anything is to be in a place where I love and accept myself for who I am, not matter what size, no matter how my muscles look, to be able to say, I have a BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING Body that is UNIQUELY my own and I CHOOSE to ROCK IT no matter what numbers are attached to it. IF I can get to that place I bet I would rock a killer bikini in ANY color!

:)

Perhaps I shall add that to my checklist and wake everyday claiming, I HAVE A BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING, SEXY Body That is UNIQUELY MY OWN and I CHOOSE TO ROCK IT!

Ooooo that feels GOOD!

A Blogger's Challenge to You!

If I have learned anything about myself this year, its that I am pretty hard on myself. Even when I have incredibly productive days, or do amazing work in acting class, write something brilliant, or make someone laugh, I often think its not good enough.

Today is December 1st, 2010. We have one month left in this glorious year.  At the start of a new year, after Jan 1, we often sit down and write resolutions of what we resolve to do better in the next year. This month, before resolving what you can do better, I would love to challenge you to look back on 2010 and declare what you did pretty damn well! Instead of focusing on the fact that I didn't make money as an actor this year (yet. there are 30 days left), I will focus on the positive aspects of my career.

I don't care if you choose to list 10 things you did well this year, or one. Take a moment, reflect on the amazing-ness that is you and what you were able to do in a 12 month span and be proud. You should probably pat yourself on the back a little, gloat and share your successes with your friends. I encourage you to challenge your friends, loved ones, co-workers to participate as well! AND I would LOVE it if you would send them to me so I can celebrate you!

Walking my talk, as they say, here goes MY accomplishments for the year 2010. I am going to go month by month, listing at least one thing a month for my career, my self and my personal life.

Wow. Within the process of writing that I managed to make lunch, Facebook a little, watch some DVR, talk to some people on the phone. . . you name it, I distracted myself with it. Self reflection is so hard sometimes and so important.

While the list above may seem only to be a listing of events or things I did this year it helped me to realize a few things. This year I have learned that by authentically sharing who I am with people I allow them the chance to really see me and decide if they want to be a part of my life. I learned that speaking the truth about who you are and what you want out of life doesn't mean using people to get to the top, but allows an honest, open connection in order which to build and foster relationships with people.

One of the biggest lessons I learned this year was that by not going into reaction about a situation and just opening myself up to the idea that everything happens for a reason can lead you to a place or a person you could never have imagined. I met my friend Tony online dating early last year. He and I went on a few dates and had a great time hanging out. However, he was dating other people at the same time and ended up connecting with someone else more than he and I did. He decided to start dating her exclusively and we stopped hanging out. Normally I would have said, f- him, I don't need him, how dare he pick someone else over me. . . BUT, I didn't I just said cool, we'll be friends and it will be awesome. Little did I know that Tony's friends call him The Connector because he's known for connecting people in his life for business and other reasons. Through Tony I met my fabulous new producing partner, director and editor extraordinaire, Patrick. Within the last month or so of knowing Patrick I've been able to create more and move forward in making my own dreams happen, including deciding to produce my own movie! I'm so grateful for Tony and the connection he made with Patrick and I, plus now I have new friends, including his girlfriend Candice! Had I swore off Tony, I would never had made this connection!

Sometimes growing up sucks, but most of the time, making the grown up decision and reacting in a sensible, non-emotional way leads to a much brighter ending!

Whether or not you hung in with me until the end of this blog, I hope you did the exercise of cataloging all of your successes from the year. I have a clearer vision of who I am becoming, who I am and who I want to be, where I want to be and the resolutions I want to make for 2011! This coming year is going to be a magical one. How can it not? It begins on 1-1-11!!

To magic, dreams, and knowing.
Shattering the Truth behind who you really are.
Much Love,
Elizabeth
